Milk Tea Mania: Flavors from Every Corner of the World

Milk tea has become one of the most beloved drinks across all age groups. At its core, it’s a simple yet satisfying combination: milk + tea (from a variety of options) + sugar = milk tea. Chewy tapioca pearls, commonly called boba, are added to milk tea. This transforms it into what many now know as boba milk tea or bubble tea. With just a few more toppings or flavourings, each cup offers a new twist on this classic favorite.

As a lifelong tea lover, I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with different varieties—Green, Black, Earl Grey, Jasmine, Chamomile, Fruity, Lemon, and beyond. Years ago, milk tea wasn’t as widespread. But over time, it has found its way into nearly every corner—served in cafés, food stalls, fast-food chains, and specialty shops.

My very first sip of bubble tea was at Chowking, a well-known fast-food chain in the Philippines. Although I don’t quite recall the exact name of the drink, I remember how much I loved it. That pearl milk tea became my instant favorite—and a gateway to a world of creamy, chewy discoveries.

Today, milk tea has evolved with creative recipes, playful toppings, and countless variations, thanks in part to trends we see on social media. Each store brings its own spin and flavor identity, making every cup a little adventure.

That’s why I’ve made it a personal bucket list goal: to try boba milk teas from different shops, cities, and even countries around the world.

Below is a list of shops I’ve visited so far, each with its own story and unique taste experience. 🙂
