A Day at Ithra: Where Stories, Culture, and Art Collide
Some places speak not just to the eyes, but to the heart, mind, and spirit. Ithra, officially known as the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, is one of them. Located in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, this world-class cultural landmark blends modern architecture with deep-rooted heritage, offering a one-of-a-kind experience for locals and tourists alike.
We decided to spend a day exploring this iconic space, and from the moment we arrived, the building left us in awe.
Awe from the Outside In
The first thing that captured our attention was Ithra’s striking architecture, a futuristic structure inspired by the shapes of oil-bearing rocks, standing as a symbol of transformation and knowledge. Every curve and contour seemed to reflect purpose.
Inside, the experience was equally mesmerising. We were welcomed by warm wooden interiors, with walls carved in intricate patterns, each symbolizing deeper meanings drawn from Islamic art and Arabian heritage. The lighting design throughout the center elevated the atmosphere, soft, modern, and intentional.
Art, Culture, and Even Cinema
One of the things that amazed me most was how Ithra houses both traditional culture and modern creativity under one roof. There were various exhibitions showcasing artwork, cultural artifacts, and innovative product designs, all presented with thoughtful storytelling.
And yes, there’s even a cinema inside! It felt surreal to stand in a place where you could admire centuries-old art and then grab popcorn for a movie moments later. This seamless blend of past and present was what made Ithra feel alive.
Lunch at Ewan: Art You Can Eat
After soaking in the cultural displays, we headed to Ewan Restaurant within the center for lunch. The ambience alone was worth the visit. The wall art and color palette of the dining space felt like walking into a painting.
I ordered a serving of cheese macaroni, and it didn’t disappoint. Creamy, flavorful, and comforting, exactly what you need after a sensory-filled morning. I finished off with a chocolate drink, rich and satisfying.
About Ithra
Ithra, which means “enrichment” in Arabic, was developed by Saudi Aramco and inaugurated in 2018. It features a museum, library, cinema, theater, art gallery, and children’s museum, making it one of the most ambitious cultural projects in the Middle East.
Beyond its physical space, Ithra is also a hub for events, festivals, and knowledge-sharing, with a vision of shaping a creative and connected Saudi society.
