When Life Gives You Paperwork, Eat Kabsa First
Riyadh isnโt just the capital of Saudi Arabia, itโs also a place where modern life and traditional flavors meet. On this particular visit, I was in the city for a very practical reason: to process my police check. But before diving into paperwork and queues, my mom had a better idea: “To eat first”
And so, we made our way to Azal Restaurant, a well-loved spot known for its warm plates and even warmer spices.
The Comfort of Kabsa
We ordered their signature chicken kabsa, a traditional Arabian rice dish infused with cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and black lime, cooked with tender chicken and often served with a tomato-based sauce or yogurt on the side.
The rice was fluffy and full of flavor, the spices werenโt overpowering but rather comforting, and the chicken was so tender it easily came apart with a spoon. It’s easy to see why kabsa is to Arabs what fried rice is to many Asians, familiar, filling, and deeply rooted in cultural identity.
Every bite was grounding. Before the dayโs busy tasks, we had this shared moment of quiet joy and delicious tradition.
