A Christmas Escape to Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia

A Festive Road Trip from Adelaide

Just in time for the Christmas season, we packed our bags and set off from Adelaide for a two-hour drive to the Fleurieu Peninsula, one of South Australiaโ€™s most loved coastal regions. Known for its rugged cliffs, charming seaside towns, and abundant wildlife, this destination promised adventure.

With excitement filling the car, our holiday story began.

First Stop: Sweet Treats in Port Elliot

Our journey officially started at the famous Port Elliot Bakery, a must-visit stop for locals and tourists alike. The bakery is known for its โ€œDonut of the Monthโ€, offering creative flavours that change regularly.

During our visit, we tried the Dubai Chocolate donut, which was rich, indulgent, and absolutely delicious. We also sampled the Pie of the Month, and every bite was filled with perfectly seasoned goodness.

Afterwards, we wandered through nearby shops and did a little thrifting. I couldnโ€™t resist picking up a few craft supplies for future projects.

We also did some walking and sightseeing at Freeman Lookout.

A Cozy Stay at McCracken Country Club

Next, we checked in at McCracken Country Club, our home for the next four days. Located near Victor Harbour, this resort is famous for its championship golf course, indoor pool, sauna, and relaxing atmosphere.

On Christmas Eve, we enjoyed dinner at their restaurant. The barramundi fillet and steak were cooked to perfection, making it the perfect way to welcome the holidays.

Christmas Day at Granite Island

Christmas morning was spent exploring Granite Island in Victor Harbour, which is connected to the mainland by a scenic causeway. The island is home to rugged rock formations, ocean views, and a colony of little penguins.

We went on a short hike, and thanks to the lovely weather, the views from the top were breathtaking. Although we hoped to spot penguins, luck wasnโ€™t on our side that day.

In the afternoon, we returned to the hotel for swimming, a sauna, and a bit of crafting, since most shops were closed for the holiday.

Boxing Day: Wildlife and Adventure

Up Close at Urimbirra Wildlife Park

Boxing Day began with a visit to Urimbirra Wildlife Park, where native Australian animals roam in spacious, natural settings.

We spent hours feeding kangaroos, meeting koalas up close, and seeing animals like quokkas, dingoes, emus, crocodiles, and rare birds. Touching a koala for the first time was unforgettable. I was so curious about how soft their fur would be.

Despite their muscular look, many kangaroos were gentle and playful, especially the babies. Feeding them became one of my favourite moments of the trip.

Thrills at Waitpinga Farm Quad Biking

In the afternoon, we headed to Waitpinga Farm Quad Bike Adventures. At first, I was nervous, and I had never driven an ATV before. However, thanks to the patient and friendly staff, confidence slowly replaced fear.

After practice, we joined a guided tour through rolling hills, sheep paddocks, and ocean viewpoints. Our guide shared stories about the farmโ€™s history, which his family has managed for four generations. The mix of speed, scenery, and storytelling made the experience unforgettable.

Sunset Dinner at Chiton Rocks

After a day full of excitement, we enjoyed dinner at Chiton Rocks Restaurant along Hindmarsh Esplanade. Overlooking the ocean, the restaurant offered a stunning sunset view.

We ordered a seafood platter and a beef steak, both beautifully presented and cooked just right. Watching the sun melt into the sea while enjoying good food felt like a perfect ending to the day.

Lunch by the Beach and a Big Leap

The next day, we had lunch at Kuti Shack in Goolwa Beach. The salad and dumplings were fresh and tasty. I would have enjoyed it better if we had chosen indoor settings. The flies were just annoying.

Then came the highlight of our entire holiday.

Skydiving in Goolwa: A Dream Come True

We booked a 9,000-foot skydive with SA Skydiving in Goolwa. With perfect weather, everything felt aligned.

After filling out forms and completing safety training, we boarded a helicopter and soared above the coastline. Feeling nervous and excited, we climbed higher.

When the moment arrived, I was securely attached to my instructor. Then, suddenly, we JUMPED.

The rush of free-fall was indescribable, pure adrenaline and awe. Seeing the world from above felt surreal. Later, my guide let me help steer the parachute, which proved harder than expected. (note to self: work on arm strength ๐Ÿ’ช).

Landing safely, receiving our certificates, and realizing I had conquered another item on my bucket list.

Farewell at Softfoot Alpaca Farm

Before heading home, we made one final stop at Softfoot Alpaca Farm.

The tour introduced us to birds, reptiles, koalas, kangaroos, and emus. Each animal had a story, many had been rescued from bushfires or neglect. Though their pasts were sad, it was comforting to see them living peacefully now.

The highlight, of course, was meeting the alpacas. We were lucky to see a newborn searching for its mother among the flock. The staff explained how alpaca fleece is valued based on colour and quality.

We fed and gently touched them, learning the golden rule: never provoke them, unless you want to be spat on.

Final Reflections: A Holiday to Remember

This Christmas holiday in the Fleurieu Peninsula was more than just a trip. It was a collection of meaningful moments. From feeding kangaroos and flying through the sky to watching sunsets and meeting rescued animals, every day offered something special.
