Reunited in the City: Thrills and Faux-Italy Feels in Manila
July 21, 2017

There’s something special about reconnecting with old friends. For us, the annual seminar we attended isn’t just about professional growth. It’s also a chance to reunite, reminisce, and make new memories.
Originally, we called ourselves TAGABA, a close-knit group of six during college. After graduation, life pulled us in different directions. Some moved far away for work, others returned to their hometowns. Over time, our busy lives meant we drifted apart.
But thanks to this yearly event, the four of us still find time to come together and celebrate friendship.

Day 1: Thrills and Laughter at Star City
Right after the seminar, we headed straight to Star City in Manila — a perfect place to relive those carefree teenage days. We tried almost every ride: the Jungle Splash, Star Flyer, Star Frisbee, and Vikings. Each ride was a rollercoaster of fun, thrills, and a little bit of scary excitement.
✅ Extreme Rides:
1. Star Flyer
🌪️ Suspended roller coaster – This is one of the most extreme rides at Star City. You’re hanging with your legs dangling as the ride twists and turns at high speed. Definitely bucket list-worthy for thrill seekers.
2. Star Frisbee
🎡 Spinning pendulum ride – A massive rotating arm swings you high while spinning. Fast, dizzying, and intense—definitely an extreme thrill ride.
3. Vikings
⛵ Viking ship ride – Swings high back and forth like a giant pendulum. Not as intense as Star Flyer, but still considered moderately extreme, especially for those afraid of heights.
We also braved the Gabi ng Lagim and the Pirate Adventure, adventures that had us screaming and laughing like kids again.
🎢 Jungle Splash
A classic water log ride featuring steep drops and thrilling splashes. It’s a must-try for those seeking a refreshing and exciting experience. Perfect for hot days and adrenaline junkies alike.
👻 Gabi ng Lagim
A haunted house attraction filled with spooky surprises and eerie effects. Perfect for those who enjoy a good scare and dark-themed adventures.
🏴☠️ Pirate Adventure
A boat ride through a pirate-themed world, complete with animatronic pirates and treasure hunts. Ideal for families and adventure enthusiasts.
After all the excitement, our stomachs were a bit queasy, so we settled for a simple meal. Sometimes, after a wild ride, less is definitely more!
Day 2: A Taste of Venice in the Heart of Taguig
The next day, we visited the Venice Grand Canal Mall in Taguig — a slice of Italy right here in the Philippines.
Located on Upper McKinley Road, this mall offers the charm of Venice without the plane ride. I’d heard many people rave about how beautiful and unique the place is, and after seeing countless photos on social media, I couldn’t wait to experience it for myself.
Our first order of business? Taking pictures. Everywhere we looked, there was something picturesque — from the Italian-style buildings to the stunning canal flowing through the middle of the mall. Street performers added to the vibrant atmosphere, making it feel like we were truly strolling through Venice.
Food and Fun on a Budget
We wandered around, soaking in the sights before heading to the food court. Although there are many fancy restaurants, there are also affordable eateries, so you can enjoy without breaking the bank.
We even tried the giant cotton candy — a sweet, whimsical treat perfect for the occasion.
We wanted to experience a gondola ride, but at 500 PHP per person, it was a bit beyond our budget. So, instead, we took plenty of photos and leisurely walked along the canal, soaking in the atmosphere.
Final Thoughts: Memories Made, Until Next Time
Our quick tour confirmed that the Venice Grand Canal Mall lives up to its reputation — it’s a magical place best enjoyed with friends. As they say, the more, the merrier!
After two days of laughter, adventure, and beautiful sights, we parted ways, returning to our busy lives. But this reunion reminded us that no matter where life takes us, friendship always finds its way back.
